In Tribute to Lance Taylor

August 17, 2022

As the New School community mourns the loss of Lance Taylor, a deeply respected Professor of Economics at the New School for Social Research as well as friend and mentor to many within our community, SCEPA would like to commemorate his many contributions to the Center.

In 1996, Lance Taylor took over as the Director of the newly created Center for Economic Policy Analysis at the New School for Social Research. During his tenure, he launched the Center’s conference series, featuring remarks by Amartya Sen, William Milberg, Duncan Foley, and John Eatwell, among others. Taylor also undertook a research project on the International Capital Markets and the Future of Economic Policy with the support of the Ford Foundation. His work culminated in a book, co-authored with John Eatwell, titled Global Finance at Risk, which presciently called for more effective regulation of international finance.

Professor Taylor continued his engagement with the Center as a Faculty Fellow. Most notably, along with Professor Duncan Foley, he spearheaded a project on Sustainable Growth with support from the Institute for New Economic Thinking. For their research in understanding how nations can reconcile their needs for growth, stability, and sustainability, both professors received the 2015 Leontief Prize.

We are deeply grateful for Professor Taylor’s contributions to our mission and honored to have counted him among our leaders. We offer our deepest condolences to his family and to his many friends, colleagues, and students.

Sincerely,

Teresa Ghilarducci, Director, Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis
